Question:
What are the minimum requirements for Apache HTTP?

I know it can run off any old Pentium box, I just want to know the specific requirements. The Apache website doesn't say. I emailed them a week ago and haven't gotten a response. I need this answer for an assignment, otherwise i'll fail.

Please help. I'd prefer not going back to my old job, performing Maori war dances for stupid American tourists.

There are no real minimum specs for a web server. It really depends on the type of load you are going to serve. Since you're using Apache, it's safe to assume the only type of thing you're using it for is an HTTP server, which doesn't require that much hardware-wise. If your computer can run Windows, it can run Apache. Though you have to remember, the client versions of Windows (95, 98, ME, 2000 Pro, XP, Vista) can only handle 10 concurrent connections. I'd recommend you look into Linux solutions or, if you can afford it, Windows Server.

For hardware, look at anything with a >800MHz CPU, >512 MB of memory, and a hard drive with enough capacity for your site. If you have experience building computers, NewEgg.com is a fantastic resource.

Also: Maori dances? You mean poi, or something else? (sorry for being a bit off-topic)

IIS 6.0 reqiures server 2003 as your operating system. XP Pro includes IIS 5.1 I prefer IIS for asp. Well heck! Why didn't you say so, big difference is that IIS 6.0 requires a server operating system (MS Server 2003 $700) Apache will run with an NT based operating sytem 2000, XP, Vista. IIS is an ASP server, will handle HTTP and ASP. Apache is an HTTP server. Servers do not need much in the way of hardware. The Programs are small and require very little memory, although Server 2003 requires more memory and disk space than XP. A server does not even require a KB, monitor(or video) or mouse if on a network. A blade server is just a cpu, memory, and a network connection. Cpu, Hard disk and connection speed are important for high traffic sites. Helpful links below:

You can run Apache on a system with 50MB free space and 64 MB RAM.

It depends on what you want to do with it. Install Linux, or FreeBSD (best), compile and install it, run some tests (try: http://httpd.apache.org/test/flood/)
