The reason why I am asking is because i am doing an evaluation about sharepoint services 2.0 to be used as our collaboration portal in the organization i am working for, I really need to know this, because I was able to install sharepoint services 2.0 on one of our servers without any license being asked. I was also even able to create a simple site on the site manager and it is fully functional. the thing is i know that sharepoint is a propeitary, so i want to know, is the one i got a free version? if it is, what is the difference between the paid version, i need this as a comparison, on my document. THANK YOU for all the help i can get.

Windows SharePoint Service (WSS) is free version, but Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) is paid version

for the differences you can check the following links:

I would go the route of the new version rather than your 2.0. Like the post above about WSS vs MOSS. WSS is free while MOSS is a fee.

For what you want to do the WSS will work for you, but go and get the new version. You can download the Free one from Microsoft, its called SharePoint Foundation 2010. Its completly free and I have it running at 8 different clients, it handels anything we need so far. Plus 2.0 is a pita to upgrade from later so going forward if its something your going to keep start with 2010 rather than 2.0 and trying to upgrade later.
