I wonder if it is necessary or optional to update a software as soon as a new version of the same is released. Should I update even if I can manage with the older version? For example I am still using Mozilla Firefox 3.5.4. What are the advantages and disadvantages (if any) of staying updated?

Not necessarily as new softwares are betas [user testing period] until final version is released, and they are seeking people to report bugs, once all the bugs are fixed that is whe they release the final product, which is of course better.

The new version generally have bug fixes from the previous version and performance enhancements and some new features mentioned and previous features removed on the manufacturers product download page.

Update is an important thing of this digital world.

Updated make you walk with the latest technology and with new improvements.

Well, it depends on your needs and on your software.

I will recommend you to update.
