Question:
How do I format my page numbers in Microsoft Word 2007 to appear in a published novel?

Okay, this is my first time actually attempting this, so I'll go into as much detail as I can: I've got a novel ready to be printed, and what I'm trying to do is number the pages properly with the header and footer so that lefthand pages display the number on the left, and my name in the middle, while righthand pages display the book title in the middle and the page number on the right.

I'm going to be ordering this novel as a published copy from a site called Lulu.com, where they handle all of the binding and shipping process so that you receive a professional copy of your work. Well, the last time I ordered something from this site, due to my own lack of formatting knowledge, I received a book that had no page numbers whatsoever, and it was roughly the size of a sheet of printer paper . . . but that's another story.

I'm pretty good with MS Word, but this is one of those little tricks that still eludes me. I've read that by formatting the page numbers/headers properly in Word, they will appear thusly in the finished product - but I'm just not educated on all of these little features that I'm working with.

If anybody could give their expert advice to somebody with a lot of aspiration . . . just not a lot of technical skill, I'd really appreciate it!

Page numbering is easy, but you still might not be happy with what that "self-publishing" house produces for you. At any rate:

1. On the Insert tab of the Ribbon, click Page Number in the Header and Footer group.

2. Select Top of Page and pick a format.

To add text to the header, double click in the header on the first page and enter the text. Double click outside the header to get out.

Good luck.

In Microsoft Word, go to "Insert Headers" under the "Insert" menu.

Select "Page Numbering", and then select "Format Page Numbering".

Good luck, :-)

it should be somewhere in the View tab. Look for header and footer view, then in the box you want (in your case the footer) use autotext to insert the desired text. If you have any trouble finding anything that i have just mentioned, use Word's in-built help function
