You should use your distribution's package manager to install it; otherwise, if you're using a distribution that doesn't offer TrueCrypt as one of its packages, just download the tarball from the TrueCrypt website: it contains an installer that you can run and it does a decent job of installing it, plus it's easy to uninstall if you change your mind.
If you're using Debian, it doesn't have a .deb for TrueCrypt on its servers, but you can install this .deb:
https://launchpad.net/truecrypt-installer
...which downloads the necessary software and builds a TrueCrypt package for you on your own system, which you can then install (it works with Ubuntu, too). However, it really is OK just to use the official tarball from the TrueCrypt website: I've used this with Slackware for example and it installed and worked without any problems.

Which distro are you using?
I assume it is Ubuntu or an Ubuntu derivative such as Linux Mint, ZorinOS, &c.,
It should already be in the repository. You could also set up the Ubuntu Personal Package Archive for TrueCrypt, open a terminal and input : (src: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2012/07/install-truecrypt-via-ppa-in-ubuntu-12-04-precise-pangolin/ )
They don't seem to package it in a debian file unfortunately. What's wrong with downloading the 'standard' installer (32 or 64bit), double clicking and saying 'run in terminal'? After I did that it popped up with a easy to use GUI?
