i bought a Lenovo a month and a half ago and now my anti virus subscription has expired. should i buy another subscription and if so how? also i am getting the message that the MS version that has been loaded is not genuine..the salesperson says i have to buy the MS package which comes for another 4500/ rs 100$. i already paid 40000/ rs 800$ for the machine. should they have given genuine software with the machine/
what to do others do about the antivirus subscription?thanks in advance:)

If you bought your computer new, it most likely included a licensed copy of windows. On the bottom of your laptop, look for a green/blue sticker that says Windows XP on it and has a 25 digit product key. This sticker should tell you what version of windows you have. (i.e. Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, etc)



If you do have this sticker, there are a couple of possibilities:



1) Microsoft may have identified your copy of windows as 'not genuine' in error. If you click the link provided when you get this error, there is information on how to contact Microsoft. Many people have found that by calling, they can get this error cleared up.



2) Someone may have re-installed windows on your computer, using a Product key other than the one on the bottom of your PC. Contact Lenovo for information on how to 'Restore' your harddrive. This will reinstall windows with your correct license information so you don't get this error anymore.

You don't have to renew your subscription to Norton Antivirus. There is no shortage of good free antivirus software problems. I'll get back to that later. Do not buy another Windows license. Experts have estimated that up to 42% of copies of Windows which were detected as not genuine by Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation were in fact genuine. You can use Microsoft's WGA support center to get more details on how to validate your copy of Windows. Even in cases in which Microsoft confirms that you do not have a valid license key, they will give you another one if you just provide details of how you got the first copy. In addition, even without a valid license key, you can still get all of the security patches. However, you will not be able to download other Microsoft software, such as Windows Defender or .NET Framework. So, I strongly recommend not to purchase another copy of Windows. If you want, I can also tell you how to stop Windows from constantly nagging you about your copy of Windows.



Going back to your antivirus question. You don't need to renew your subscription with Norton Antivirus. Norton's products are notorious for slowing down computer because they use a lot of resources and worse they are also expensive. Instead, consider using a free antivirus like: AVG, Antivir and Avast. These 3 are the most popular free antivirus programs available. The simplest to setup and use is AVG. Antivir has some advance settings which requires some advanced computer knowledge, while Avast requires you to register every 4 months to continue using their product. If you are adamant about using Norton Antivirus, Google's Pack offers a special Norton Antivirus version with a free 6 months of updates. After 6 months, you have to purchase a license to continue using it. You can download it at:

Why do you bother dishing out all of this money for anti-virus subscriptions!? Seriously... why should you pay Norton to patch holes in Microsoft's shoddy operating system? Get a Macintosh and forget about viruses. I can't believe you PC users waste all of this money! Look how much money Symantec makes from you people. Your copy of Windows is not genuine? Why bother with that, either? Apple's Mac OS X doesn't require authenication. It just works, unlike Windows. I think it's time people start demanding higher quality.

Wow, take that POS back and don't buy another thing from that reseller, Lenovo doesn't install non-genuine software, I'd be wary of that guy, you shouldn't have to buy a copy or license it should have come with your comptuer. As for your AntiVirus dont' waste your timew ith Norton, it stinks. Try searching for AVG Free on google and there is a great free AntiVirus.

I have grisoft-AVG anti virus and its free...It works perfectly OK and I have no complaints...



Also, in keyword, type in stinger and download stinger as a compliment to the AVG anti virus. It is not a good idea to have more than one anti virus on your comp, they might interfere with each other's performance. But stinger compliments the AVG and helps with virus in ways the AVG might be missing. Together the two make a powerful protection against virus.



So, type in grisoft.com in the search bar and download the AVG anti virus....then download the stinger from entering in the keyword listed on the tool bar and download-save, then run each before you go to bed every night and you will be fine.



Also, clean out your buddy list from time to time and delete anyone you don't know or are not familiar with.

You can update Nortons online. Just open your Nortons program... (There should be icon in the right hand task bar)



Then select .. Days Remaining... then to the left there should be a button that says.. Renew Now... That will take you to a subscription renewal site.
