Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Linux Mint 9 has a similar feature called mint4win and the directions given above for Wubi can be followed

Ubuntu 10.04 and Linux Mint 9 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

I think the other responders have answered your questions, I want to let you know about a new super easy way to install Ubuntu. See the link below. You do not have to burn a cd. You simply download a file called wubi (Windows UBuntu Installer) and run it. It will download the ubuntu system and install it on your system. If you want to remove it you use windows Add Remove feature to completely remove it. Be sure to read the FAQ. The second link is where you donwload wubi. The third and fourth links will help you do things in ubuntu. The way you get something done in linux is not the same as in windows so to have a pleasant experience it is necessary to read the tutorials and instructions. Have fun

There are many different brands of Linux. Ubuntu seems to be the most popular desktop solution these days, but they are all very similar and based on the same UNIX spec. I can tell you from personal experience that Ubuntu and CentOS are easy to use and setup. (Note: This is relative... just know that you will run into more hardware compatibility issues with any Linux system vs. Windows.)

Probably the most popular desktop solution. Lots of options for desktop customization. I use the Netbook Remix version on an old laptop.

Many servers use CentOS/Red Hat, but they offer Desktop solutions. Very reliable, constant releases, secure. I use this on all my web servers.

Apple's OS X includes some code from FreeBSD and NetBSD within the core.

Go to My Linux Page and you can Download your Favorite Linux Distribution. Just go to: Web Links → Linux Distribution Downloads and choose your favorite. What you want to do is dual boot. In other words you want to run two operating systems from one computer. Just install Windows first and then install Linux. This is because you want Grub to boot your operating systems. Try Ubuntu or openSuSE it seems to be the favorite for beginners.

just a little heads up, ubuntu is only one of MANY different types of linux called distributions. it is the best for beginners (or anyone if you ask me) because of how much support it has for drivers, etc and if you have a problem with it all you have to do is google the problem followed by ubuntu and someone has had the same problem solved. some other distributions out there are kubuntu (has a different windows manager than gnome for ubuntu) fedora, debian, and way too many more to list here.

If it's for SURFING ONLY, give this a try. It is debian-based and all sound and audio works right out of the box. No need to download and install flash player.
