Please Help.....................please?

I have this computer. It has windows Me on it. And it kept saying system halted on it and then turned off. So I went in to safe mode and used the system restore feature to revert the computer to 3 days ago. It "restored" and restarted.

However, the problem is that when the computer boots up, it just doesn't show anything on the desktop at all except the picture. Same for safe mode. I tried a couple things on step by step confirmation but it did nothing.

When I push ctrl-alt-del, the task manager says NOTHING. I'm at my wits end and really really appreciate your help. If it worked, I'd find a way to return the favor to you.

1. Boot with your Start-Up disk. You did make one of those, right?

2. Copy data files that you need onto a floppy. PKZip will help you get bigger files onto multiple flopples.

3. Wipe your drive & re-install your operating system. If your hardware will support it, consider upgrading to a more current OS.

4. Re-install your applications.

5. Restore the data that you backed up.

6. Consider installing tape or disk backup hardware & software so that any future recovery is less painful.

Best of luck to you.

Ouch. Sounds like you got a trojan virus on your computer. The best thing that I can think to do would be to call somewhere for professional help (Geek Squad). The only other thing I can think of is reinstalling windows, so that's probably your best option right now.

I would re-install the operating system or upgrade to windows XP, doesn't sound like the computer has a problem, it's with the software.

try this one first before reinstalling

you say you can go to task manager right. on the task manager

look for "new process" or start new process or run process i dont know with ME but there should be one.. then you will be ask which file to run type explorer.exe or msconfig

and see what happen. if everything went ok. then you can start fising things. run msconfig im 95% sure the problem is in there.

I would bet you have a virus. Get on google and search for the same problem... I work on computers and if you brought it to me that is what I would do.... also do you have a virus checker on it that is good?

crapcleaner would be great to run on this if you could get to a screen.

Your best bet is to reinstall windows. There are probably a couple missing files that are causing the problem.
