Can I stop people editing a Word (2003) document?

I have protected my word document from being edited with a password which is fine, but it as a result it also requests a password when you first open the document. I don't want to password protect the document (to open it), just stop people making changes. Is there a solution I am missing? I know a bit of VBA so if you have some VBA code that would be good!

Convert it into a adobe PDF.

Then they cannot edit it.

MS used to let you download a converter, I don't know if they still do. But there are a number of free ware versions, and you can use Adobe website to convert a certain number for free before they ask you to purchase their product.

Here is an answer if you want them to be able to open without having to enter a password:

To do this all you have to do is give the document a password.. go to "save as"... then on the "save as" dialogs go to "tools" then "security option"...fill in the "password to modify".. but don't fill in the "password to open" because you want the person to be able to open it. Then click "ok"...then re-enter the password. (I'm indebted to A. Blaze).

But if you want them to change some parts but not others, highlight the area you want to leave editable and click the protect button to lock the rest. Do not enter a password - it isn't necessary. (A Ho).

Hope it helps.

It asks you a PW to open it to edit it, but the person can click on the "Read Only" button, and open it in Read only mode. You don't need to enter the password.

I agree with the suggestion to convert it to a pdf file. If you save it as read only, someone can save it under a different name and then edit it.

In observe XP (2002), you may turn off history Repagination in general view yet no longer in Print format. right this is how: a million. click the approaches->thoughts menu merchandise. 2. click the customary Tab. 3. Deselect history Repagination.(In Print format, it can not be deselected.) 4. click ok. observe that this could take effect for all data, no longer purely this one.

I think there is a way to send it "READ ONLY", but can't remember how to do it. AND, that's why there is a help area up there where it says: File; Edit, View; Tools, Help. Click on help and see how to do it.
