Question:
Why doesn't IE 7/8 load a new web page in the open tab?? It always opens a new tab!?

OK, IE 7/8 has really been irking me lately. I use Firefox 3.5 mostly, but still need to use IE for certain sites. With Firefox, it will use the open tab to load a new address typed in the address bar, a search in the Google toolbar, or a click of a bookmark. This is convenient because I want to control whether or when the browser opens a new tab.

With IE, I can load a new tab - pictured here: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/deftone56/IE-1.jpg and the about:tab screen loads. Then, assuming I type a URL into the address bar, instead of obviously using the open tab (showing about:tabs), IE opens yet another tab to load the page - pictured here: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b119/deftone56/IE-2.jpg

Is there a way to force IE to act like Firefox, i.e. force IE to use the front/open tab to load new pages, and only open a new tab when I click to open a new tab?

By default Internet Explorer opens pop-up links or hyperlinks in a new window and you have the options to customize the tab-settings to have pop-up links or hyperlinks to open in a new tab instead.

So or you open pop-ups and hyperlinks in new tabs or in new windows. The other option is not to use tabbed browsing.

Check your tab settings in IE to see if maybe you've got it set to open links in a new tab instead of the same windows. In IE go to Tools > Internet Options. On the first screen (toward the bottom) is a button for Tab Settings. Check the various settings...there's one toward the bottom of the list that controls how links will open (new tab, same window, etc)
