There are plenty of OS's out there. Linux is just the most popular besides windows. For the average user though, there is no use in going outside linux/OsX/Windows.

attempt freebsd, or the different bsd variation. Ther is openindiana, haiku os, and reactos. With Linux, you seem to no longer be too chuffed with the pc atmosphere, that is relatively helpful to aim KDE, LXDE, Xfce, &c.

Depends on the architecture of the machine you are using. There are lots of operating systems out there, but some only work on certain architectures. For example, z/OS is an operating system, but it only works on mainframe computers.
