I am downloading movies from Limewire. When I try to play the movie after downloading it, a prompt appears that says Windows Media Player cannot play this file. I am downloading .avi files. Is there something I have to do to convert these files so they will play on Windows Media Player??

This is most likely a codec issue. I hope you are not downloading copyrighted movies because that is illegal.

I recommend using VLC media player (it can play anything). Best part is it's free, open source and completely free of spyware. It is also the most popular player out there.

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

If you also want free codecs, the K-Lite Codec Pack should allow your media player (e.g. Windows Media Player) to able to play 99% of all the movies that you download from the internet.

Hey There. As the poster above says, It may just be a codec issue. Try installing the K-Lite Codec pack or the XP Codec Pack (Recommended)

A Google search should reveal these.

Good Luck. And if you like the movie, BUY IT!

There is an easier way just go to downloads.com and in the search bar type in GOM player it will open any type of movie
