Is there a way to have access to microsoft word files on a usb without having microsoft word on the computer?

I am trying to not have to buy another microsoft office and I have some microsoft word documents on my usb; but wordpad is not enough to open them. so i was wondering if there was an app, or something with windows 8.1. so I could not just view them, but edit them.
