You can opt for Kingsoft Office Suit 2012... it's free. Of course not as advanced as MS Office suite. But it will meet your basic demands, It comes with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint... I did try it, but I kind of do a lot with the Office suit, so had to leave it. But I guess it'll be great for your daughter, and mainly because it is school... :)

Give it a shot... here's the link... http://www.kingsoftstore.com/kingsoft-office-freeware.html

Hope this helps... :)

For a pc it is recommended that you use the 64 bit set up cause it handles RAM better. For Office XP it should work, I know people who have Windows 8 and are running Office XP on it\

Microsoft Office XP is compatible with Windows 7. You don't have to put up with OpenOffice.

I can recommend a free office suite to you. I mean WPS Office. I have been using this office suite since it was called Kingsoft Office and now it has a brand new name. WPS Office works very well and it has updated to WPS Office Free 2014. It is easy to learn how to use it. Here is the download link: http://www.wps.com/download/2716/ You can have a try.

It should work fine. Another user I installed on her computer for her and the only issue she ever had was with outlook. So you should be fine too.
