I was in the Windows 7 beta testing team and I got a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate

I am wondering if after I "Upgrade Windows" will i still have all my files and be able to downgrade back to Vista if I decide not to use 7?

Also, can I use my Vista Basic disc from Dell to downgrade or do it in the computer or something else, or do i need a real copy of Vista to downgrade?

Thanks! Best answer gets 10 bonus points! Happy answering! :D

"compatability with certain hardware and software"

Vista (32-bit) and W7 (32-bit) device drivers are one and the same, fully compatible. Simply install all the DELL device drivers to W7, they will not be included with the generic W7 package.

From Vista Basic, you can NOT Upgrade to 7 Ultimate, you must do a Custom Install, as fully explained on Microsoft's website (see below for the chart). It will trash everything on Vista Basic, unless you back up all your personal files. And, you will also need to re-install Dr. Scheme after the W7 Custom Install, as well as all other Apps.

That said, if you change your mind, the Dell Vista Basic Recovery disk will return your PC to "Factory Fresh", including all required device drivers.

Why in the heck would you want to downgrade to Vista? That's like moving from a car to a Big Wheel. Windows Vista is just incarnate of Windows ME. Consider yourself lucky to get a free copy of Ultimate.

You would lose your files. So, back them up, then reinstall Vista. You should be able to use the disc from Dell.
