This is a bug in Rosetta Stone. When you uninstall the product, it will often leave a file behind called "tracking.db3". This hidden file may not show up if you do a search in Windows for it. In XP, you can find the file under "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Rosetta Stone". I got rid off the entire directory since I was going to reinstall, but you could just remove the tracking.db3 file to get rid of the error. It is a bug because NO APPLICATION SHOULD EVER LEAVE ANYTHING BEHIND WHEN IT IS UNINSTALLED. Period. When I called to complain, tech support suggested that if one deactivates the product first, it may not happen, but I did not test this. One might logically conclude that an uninstall would also include deactivation, since what good is activation for a product that has been removed? There is no excuse for this sort of sloppiness.
Also, tech support said you could get such an error if you cancel out of the update process mid-stream. This is another bug. This should not happen under any circumstances (poor programming), and if they are so incompetent as to not prevent this, they should at least warn the user since the update process can take quite some time.
