Why can't I copy and paste formulas in Microsoft Word?

Ok so when I try to copy and paste a formula in word it won't work. I can insert the equation just fine, like saying 2 squared. Then I copy and paste it but it pastes as 2^2. It also won't paste tables. It's driving me nuts and the internet is not answering my questions. PLEASE HELP!
