I Can't figure out why Java won't work on Linux Ubuntu.?

ok, may be a little complicated...

I installed java jdk like it told me to on the website (it is legitimate sun software)

1. I got the x86 package jdk-7u17-nb-7_3-linux-i586.sh
2. in the terminal i moved it to usr/local/java
3. I ran it with root
4. I moved the libjavaplugin_oji.so file to the mozilla plugins folder
5. I created a PATH file for it, giving the bin location correctly.

Problem:
Firefox doesn't aknowledge the existance of java
when I search in the Dash Home Java JDK doesn't come up.

Basically: I don't know why it didn't run.

I am on 32 bit, Ubuntu 12,10

Did you move it to "usr/local/java" or "/usr/local/java"?

Note: If you are upgrading your Java version then before creating new symbolic link you should remove old symbolic link to enable latest downloaded Java.



To remove old symbolic link:

type cd /plugins

rm libjavaplugin_oji.so
