Mac PowerPoint supports uncompressed avi format. Compressed avi movies won't play. DON'T change the extension thinking that also changes the file type - it doesn't.
PowerPoint also supports .mov and (if you install the free Flip4Mac Quicktime codecs) wmv. Both mov and wmv are much more compressed formats and play back at higher quality, so I recommend them over uncompressed avi.
Several web sites are available that will convert your avi to wmv or mov for free. I usually use http://www.mediaconverter.org/ but there are others.

AVI format is not support in macs by defualt.
AVI format is MIcrosoft's audio/video format, not apple's
renaming them into MPG or WMV will not do anything but cause an error, because the data was still writen in AVI format.
Try a CONVERT program to convert the AVI file into an mpg format. MPG is a audio/video format that is more cross-platform.
Here is a mac software that can convert AVI to MPG:

You can try Pavtube Video Converter for Mac.

It supports various video formats conversion.
