I found this forum explaining a terminal command I can use. It says just to modify it then you can use it but I do not know how to modify this.

command "mount -o loop casper-rw /media/mnt"
or
mount -o loop casper-rw-1000M /mnt/odd2fs/

Here is the link to the forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p…
It is pretty old but someone left a comment that it still works with modifications.

I am a Linux dummy, so please dumb this down for me and tell me in great detail each step I need to take to get my files from the casper-rw file. This is on an bootable SD card in my laptop. Whenever I boot to it I cannot connect to the Internet and when I plug in a USB Drive or a hard-drive it does not mount so I cannot copy my files from there.

I just downloaded ubuntu 12.04 LTS, today on its release date; today.
The SD card has ubuntu 11.10 on it, but I have booted from the 12.04 USB drive and then plugged in and mounted the damaged SD card.

Please tell me what actions I must take and where my files will be saved to when I retrieve them. Thank you, looking forward to your response.

I tend to scratch my head when people claim to have a damaged sd card or usb flash drive. It is not common knowledge that these devices can get left in an open state and no computer will see them. The solution is to have the computer running, plug it in and shut down the computer. Remove the device and boot backup, wait a minute and then plug the device back in. If the computer now recognizes it, it was left in an open state. As far as using terminal commands, you have to be the root user to change or modify any of the operating system files. The root account is disabled in most Versions of Linux to keep people from messing the operating system up. I believe when you open the terminal you enter su and press enter, it will ask for your password and it should switch over to the root user. I don't have my Linux up and running since I am using Windows right now.

get about four or so disks, not certain how many exactly, the website will tell you how many you need ( cd -r ) and burn the image to those disks so your computer can read them...but since you say you only have a cd rom drive then that should mean you dont have a burner... best luck is have a friend make the live cd for you... btw, linuxmint is better than the standard ubuntu.. its just an offbreed
