"Which is best operating system for my PC of linux versions?"

That depends on a few factors: your computer's hardware, your individual needs/workflow, and your familiarity with Linux-based systems. Arch or Gentoo may fly on your PC, but if you're a newbie who doesn't know what a repository *is*, let alone how to add or remove one, it's a moot point, you're in way over your head.

I don't think any distro offers free installation discs/USB sticks any longer; Canonical ended it's prominent "Ship It" program a year ago, costs were simply too high. There are vendors which sell Linux discs, but frankly downloading, burning, and installing them yourself is easy, and provides an example of how tech support the "Linux Way" is done: research your options, decide, and if you run into trouble, Google and the forums are your best friend.

There's a reason so many Linux distros exist: different users have different wants/needs, the large variety of choices cater to the userbase. The best Linux distro is the one that works best for you.

Ubuntu and Ubuntu Remasters make up the majority of Linux being used by people. Even most of the Netbook Linux are Ubuntu based. Ubuntu is an off shoot of Debian Linux. But Best is what fits your needs and requirements and that is what customize the Distribution is all about. You install what you need and remove what you don't need provided it doesn't affect the rest of the operating system. They are all Best. It is simply user preference and opinions.

You down Load Linux from the Internet. It is normally an .iso file that you burn to a CD/DVD and then boot the computer up with the LiveCD you just made. Most will run as a LiveCD that runs in memory only until you decide to install it. Ubuntu is the most recommended and then Linux Mint Linux. Linux Mint Cinnamon and Mate are Gnome based and probably a lot easier to use than distributions use the new KDE desktop Environment. If you want the Looks and feel of Windows, KDE is the one to choose. Almost every Linux uses identical files for the base operating system and most of the programs and software.

For that reason I don't recommend a specific Linux Distribution.

I three recommendations.

1) Ubuntu

2) Linux Mint

3) OpenSUSE

They all can be downloaded for free, burnt to a disk, and installed.
