I have to agree with Carling... UltimateEdition is a great choice if you are looking for a Distro that has all the bells and whistles all ready set up and in place after rebooting from the install, it really is brilliant! In all fairness... any distro can be tweaked in nearly endless ways to act and feel the way you want it to... it IS the beauty of Linux... totally customizable.

One of the exciting things about Linux is downloading the latest releases and testing them out. with the Live CD/DVD's Which I do every week, This weeks releases worth taking a look at are

Ultimate Edition 3.2 (Brilliant)

Calculte Linux (Excellent)

Linux Mint 12 LXDE (Excellent)

Vector Linux (Has Multi 3D Desktops)

Pear OS (Like the Mac desktop)

Dream Linux (Like the Mac desktop)

Keep away from Ubuntu. People that recommend it have never used any other distributions so they don't know what's good or bad. I don't recommend Ubuntu Period

All of them can be downloaded from here

http://distrowatch.com.

I hope you enjoy your experience like I do. using the live disks, Make sure you buy the rewritable CD/DVD disks though thyen you can use them over and over

Short answer: the best linux distro is the one that works best for you.

Longer answer: One major advantage of Linux over Windows and Mac is that you can test-drive the system before you commit to an installation. Try out the following and see if any 'click' with you:

Linux Mint

openSUSE (KDE edition)

Pinguy

Zorin

Crunchbang

Fuduntu

Zeven OS (KDE edition)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 11 which is based upon Ubuntu 11.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 11 Download

Linux Mint 11 Release Notes/Installation Guide/User Guide

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 11 then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint 11 can also be run straight from the LiveDVD without touching your Hard Drive

Ubuntu is best. Its most user-friendly and most stable.

The GUI is beautiful, and the boot up speed is very good as well.

My favorite is Ubuntu 11.10, although 12.04 is out now. but if you try Ubuntu 10.10 and you like it, i would suggest Fuduntu 2012.1 because it is based on Fedora and Ubuntu 10.10, but it also has a Mac styled dock, pre-installed with Google Chromium and VLC player and .mp3 readers. And if you have a live disc of Fuduntu, it gets installed within 15 to 30 minutes and doesn't require internet connection

You can use any linux dist. but ubuntu is the best one.I'm currently using 10.10 but can upgrade from this to 11.04 or 11.10.Just go for it.
