Just wondering, does anyone know what windows operating systems come with Microsoft Word? Vista, XP, etc. I'm looking to purchase a new laptop, and that's one of my few requirements, as a lover of writing. Thanks much.

None. No version of Windows, ever, has included MS Word. WordPad and NotePad have always been part of the OS, but that's it. Word has always been part of the MS Office suite, which is a completely different package. There was a day when computer manufacturers would include Office on computers when you purchased them, but very few offer that option today since hardware is so cheap. I believe vendors like Dell and Gateway offer it as an option, though.

You can purchase Office separately and install it yourself, or you can download and install OpenOffice, which is a free, open source office suite comparable to MS Office.

One more warning, after all those, about MS Word. Some computer manufacturers DO provide a trial version of Office, but it will expire without warning in 30 or 60 days after you start using it. After that it will let you read your files, but not edit or copy them.

It's like being hooked like a fish.

If you find yourself in this situation and have access to another, earlier, copy of Word, you can download the free Compatibility Pack from Microsoft to bail yourself out.

Hope that helps.

Word is a separate package as part of Microsoft office. Different version of he OS may support different versions of word, so just go for the most up to date combo you can afford i guess.

Depending if you need that much functionality, there is a cheaper equivalent as part of microsoft works which (at least it used to) be shipped with most new PC's.

Hope that helps..

Most computer come with microsoft word but not the full office. Before buying it will be worth checking though. The is the free open office option also that is very similar and compatable with word documents.

Nope, as far as Vista Home premium/ultimate and winXP pro/home is concerned. had all of these OS's and none of them have included office. Unless whom you bought it from has added it in. openoffice.org has a free open source version of MS office, kind of like internet explorer vs mozilla firefox.

None.

Get OpenOffice.org It's free, it's compatible with all Word formats up to 2003, and you can download it.
