Problem with Microsoft Word?

Okay, so I have Word 2007 on a Vista OS. Recently, if I try opening a .doc (ie the 1997-2003 compatible documents) from any file location, Word says it can't find the file. However, if I try to open the same document again from Word itself, or when Word is already open, it has no problem.
This doesn't appear to affect .docx files.

At first I thought this might have to do with the fact that I've brought my copmuter with me from Australi to Ireland and that maybe the files I've gotten here (from lecturers etc) use some kind of accompanying program like Endnote that only works if you start up Word first.
But I've checked compatible files that I have created myself and they're also affected.

At the moment it's just annoying and I can still view these documents, but I'm still wondering why this has happened and whether there is a simple option that will fix this problem.
Excel and the other Office programs seem to be fine.

You haven't mentioned whether Winword is opening or not.

Your problem is probably related to Windows, not Word.

Select a document, RtClk>Properties>Opens with>Change>Browse to the present Winword application (Program Files>MS Office>) check the box that says 'Use this program always'.

If it is not successful, do a System Restore.

I wonder if your .doc file association with Word has gotten confused and it's really winword.exe that can't be found. Try setting it again this way:



1. In Windows Explorer, find a .doc file.

2. Right-click on it and select Open With.

3. If Microsoft Word shows up in the Recommended list, select it.

4. If it does not, click the Browse button. Navigate to the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12. Find and select the file winword.exe.

5. In either case, check the checkbox Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

6. Click OK.

in the vista search down the bottom type folder options

click the file type tab, scroll for DOC and select word 2007 to open it
