Will Java slow down my computer?

When I check out my Java settings, through the Control Panel, I saw that I had four versions that were all enabled. They were 1.6.0_23, 1.6.0_07, 1.6.0_06, and 1.5.0_06. Once again, all of them were enabled.

Will this slow down my computer ? Also, any tips on how to make Java run faster?

It's almost certain that you really only have one version installed, and the control panel is wrong. To make sure, you could try to uninstall all of them (starting with the newest), and once you're done - whether or not they were really all there in the first place - you could then restart your PC, then download and install the latest Java from here:

As far as whether having one or more versions of Java installed will slow down your computer, the answer is no - that's because Java isn't used most of the time and only a few programs and web sites ever use it, and only while those programs are running.

Finally, the only way to make it run faster is to get a faster computer. :-)

Java will not slow down your computer because it only activates the one that you only need for that application. There is no way to speed java up however you can try and set things to a lower resolution so that you get a faster download of that content, but if you are having problems in the first place with java then you should seriously upgrade to a new computer.

Yes. It will also open you up to security vulnerabilities.

I have been hit by 3 viruses in my life. All 3 got on my computer using a vulnerability in the JRE. I'd like to think by now they would have learned from their mistakes and stop pushing out updates with more serious vulnerabilities, maybe learn to type check their variables and other really basic security stuff, but that's simply not the case.

That being said. If you're really careful you generally won't get many viruses with a JRE on your computer.

The reason java will slow down your computer is that it will download updates. That being said, you want it to download updates, because that's how they fix vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited to do bad things to people.

A lot of fanbois that don't live in reality and are indoctrinated to love java despite its terrible flaws will say I don't know what I'm talking about. Google "Java Vulnerabilities 2010" and see for yourself.

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimageā„¢ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

I am a professional developer with Microsoft, and have about 10 years of experience in the field of Computer Engineering. Most problems with PC's are the result of malicious software that infected a Computer. Examples of this are things such as malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, root kits, and worms. In other cases, they are the result of stability issues due to crashes, freezes, or Hardware Issues. Some examples of hardware issues could be a dirty cooling fan causing the computer to overheat, or low memory due to lack of RAM, which could cause the PC to run slowly. You may think it could be a virus, or malware, or registry issues, but it could be something else entirely. As a computer layman, one may find it hard to really ascertain what exactly is causing the problems, without having a professional do an in depth analysis of your PC.

As professional computer repairs can be quite costly, I would recommend to you a Software that many of us in the tech department here at Microsoft use personally and professionally to diagnose and repair computer problems very quickly. It is a software called Reimage, from https://tr.im/ReimageRepair .. In my personal experience, and in the experience of many of my associates, this is probably the best software ever created for those experiencing computer troubles. This is likely to remedy just about ANY problem your computer could possibly be having, and have it running like new. Reimage has won several awards, and been featured in publications such as PC Mag.

Having numerous applications automatically running at start up and allocating memory, network, and processor resources is never an efficient use of hardware. Uninstall all of those other versions and then go to sun Microsystem's java web site. Download the latest version. Then install it. http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp This will also enhance your security.

Obviously it will. Best part to make it run faster is to download software like reginout. Good for Java and your system.
