How can I get a screen resolution higher than 1024x768?

Before my computer crashed and I had to re-install Windows, I had a higher screen resolution than this. When I'd go to the "screen resolution" window in the Control Panel, there used to be about 4 screen resolution choices. Now there are only two, the highest of which is 1024x768, and my screen doesn't look exactly the way it used to. Can anyone help?

Odds are you still need to reinstall drivers for your video card. Until then you're using Window's default video drivers, which won't let you use your video card to it's fullest.

1280x800 is the largest possible in 32-bit operating systems, and is widescreen. If when you installed the OS, you gave it a 32-bit color quality, then that would change the resolution options. Check whether or not you can change your color depth from 32-bit to 64-bit, and if you're on 64-bit and it still doesn't work, I'm going to need some computer specs. Mostly just your OS, though.

OS = XP, Vista, 7, etc

Edit: Yeah, update your drivers like the others said, first, but if that doesn't work...

Install the proper driver for your graphics card. You need to know the manufacturer of the card and go to their website to get the driver. It could be NVidia, ATI or Intel.
