hard disk problem vista --> xp?

hi, i have windows vista on my xps notebook. However, I keep hearing a CONSTANT scratching noise from the hard disk every second. Even if i dont do anything with the notebook and just leave it idle, it keeps accessing the hard drive for some reason.

Ive disabled indexing, windows defender, auto defrag, etc,.. but to no avail.
Im thinking of formatting my c drive and returning to xp.
This xps1530 system came with vista premium pre installed. Has anyone got this notebook and has gone back to xp with it?
if so, was it successful?

Also, if anyone could suggest things i could do to figure out this hard disk problem, i would be ever so greatful as it would save me alot of bother going back to xp.

(ps, when i was ordering the system, the sales guy said that this notebook doesn't come with xp, only vista premium,..is there a reason for this or can I just stick on whatever os i want?)
cheers.

Check the Event Viewer to see if it's logged anything. This could be a hardware problem.

One potential problem with downgrading is that XP is too old to recognize SATA drives. If you try to install it, it will tell you that you don't have a hard drive.

Check your disk defrag settings..vista is scheduled to defrag by default.

I tried xp on my laptop but it wouldnt load properly.I believe I need a 64 bit version of xp..but vista is ok and with sp1 some annoying problems are fixed

its glaring your ram isnt sufficient to run vista good so its utilising the web site document to supplement itself. the two strengthen your ram in case you are able to or as you assert swap to xp. the sales guy gets paid to declare that. you may get maximum structures with xp in in case you shop around.you need to decrease your web site document yet this could recommend that vista wont run good
