GNOME is a Linux Desktop Environment

If you wanted to take a look at Linux I recommend a LiveCD.

There are two worth taking an immediate look at being Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04

Linux is now in a position of offering a viable alternative to proprietary platforms and more than capable of offering a full desktop experience.

You download the ISO. image of either Linux Mint 6 or Ubuntu 9.04 then you need to create a Bootable CD from the ISO. This can easily be done using Nero Burning ROM or similar software. Linux Mint 6 and Ubuntu 9.04 can also be run straight from the LiveCD you have created without touching your Hard Drive.

There are two choices. As the other guy said, there is "wubi" which installs linux as a virtual machine and you basically run linux as a program within windows. Personally, I feel this undersells the system because it is artificially slow. Try out a live cd first (it'll boot and run off of a cd/dvd without being installed) to decide if you want to go that route. There are lots of instructions online on how to install a system to dual boot windows and the actual installers are pretty good about it (no harder than installing XP in the first place and more user friendly in some cases.) From personal experience I'd make sure you defrag your harddisk first and have a really good chunk of hard disk space/a second drive to install on. I'd also use a windows repartitioning tool since linux is still not great at shrinking windows drives.

Sorry -Gnome is really intended for Unix and Particularly Linux distributions.

You might consider the LIVE-CDs of, say, Ubuntu, as suggested above.

Windows, for better or for worse, very much connects the kernel to the windowing software. For UNIX and Linux, the windowing software is, from the kernel's point of view, just an application.

You cannot install gnome on windows.

These sites might help install gnome on red hat.

Good luck
