I was having problems with audio skipping, stuttering.. The trouble shooter said delete the driver file and reload. But after I deleted it, I cannot find a replacement on line. I have an ECS Elitegroup laptop with XP. It says I use a sigmatel high definition audio codec.. SO on line I found the download... I thought. It says keyboard driver. I want to pull out my hair.

I didn't find any laptop presented on ECS Elitegroup website, were you referring to notebook?

Click the link below, select a notebook model which is identical to yours, and you'll find what you need under Audio tag:

You can try update wizard bundled with Windows OSes as well:

Windows Vista

1 Open the "Start" menu and click "Control Panel." Then click "Hardware and Sound," followed by "Device Manager."

2 Locate "Sound, video and game controllers" and click the (+) sign to expand the menu and view your sound card.

3 Right-click the name of your sound card and select "Update Driver Software" from the drop-down menu. It is recommended that you choose the option to "Search automatically for updated driver software." Once your computer has located the most recent driver available online, it will automatically install the latest version.

Windows XP

1 Open the "Start" menu, click "Control Panel" and then click "System."

2 Click the "Hardware" tab, locate "Sound, video and game controllers" and click the (+) sign to expand the menu and view your sound card.

3 Right-click the name of your sound card and select "Update Driver Software" from the drop-down menu to automatically install the latest version.

You need to search for your laptop model in the drivers section of the ECS website yourself. I can only point you to the main drivers section because I don't know your laptop model. Look up your model, the sound/audio drivers should be there. http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads/Downloads_list.aspx?MenuID=61&LanID=8

This was NOT the way to fix it. You need to download the drivers specific to your machine from the manufacturer's site. search by model.
