Question:
Display the page numbers in MS Word?

Am I going mental? I swear my Word (2003) used to say what page I was on, and how many there were in the document at the bottom of the screen... but now it has gone! (I am NOT talking about inserting page numbers into documents).

I have tried googling this, and searching the help, but all I get is info about how to insert page numbers - which I don't care about!

Surely I didn't imagine this mildly helpful feature? How do I get it back?!

Here's more than you wanted to know. Go under "Tools/Options/View/ and check the box for "Status Bar" then click OK. You will now have your page count at the bottom left of your screen. I used to use this view but found that the only thing I ever cared about was the page count. I decided having that bar across the bottom was not worth it for me as I didn't use any of the other features. My document needs are pretty simple. Good luck. Hope this helps. If you already know what the toolbar does, you can skip the boring details below. ps - I've shown a link below you might save for future questions.

This is what you gain by selecting the Status Bar option:

The status bar is a horizontal area at the bottom of the document window in Microsoft Word. It provides information about the current state of what you are viewing in the window.

It will show:

Page number

Sec number - (Shows the section such as section: A portion of a document in which you set certain page formatting options. You create a new section when you want to change such properties as line numbering, number of columns, or headers and footers.) number of the page shown in the window.)

Number/number (Shows the page number and the total number of pages based on the physical page count in the document such as 2 out of 4)

At measurement - (Shows the distance from the top of the page to your insertion point. No measurement is displayed if the insertion point is not in the window.)

Ln (line) number - (Shows the line of text where the insertion point is located. No measurement is displayed if the insertion point is not in the window.)

Col (column)number - (Shows the distance, in number of characters, from the left margin to the insertion point. No measurement is displayed if the insertion point is not in the window.)

REC - (Shows the macro recorder status. Double-click REC to turn the macro recorder on or off. When the recorder is off, REC appears dimmed.)

TRK-(Shows the track changes status. Double-click TRK to turn the Track Changes feature on or off. When changes are not being tracked, TRK appears dimmed.)

EXT - (Shows the extend selection mode status. Double-click EXT to turn the mode on or off. When selection mode is off, EXT appears dimmed.)

OVR - (Shows the overtype: The replacement of existing characters with newly typed characters. When overtype mode is turned on, OVR appears in the status bar.) Double-click OVR to turn the mode on or off. When overtype mode is off, OVR appears dimmed.)

Language - (Shows the language at the insertion point. Double-click to change the language format of selected text.

Shows the spelling and grammar checking status. (When Word is in the process of checking for errors, an animated pen appears over the book. If no errors are found, a check mark appears. If an error is found, an "X" appears. To resolve the error, double-click this icon. If you want the spelling and grammar checker to be turned off, you also need to turn off smart tags.)

Shows the background save status. (When a pulsating disk icon appears, Word is saving your document in the background as you work.)

Shows the background print status. (When a printer icon appears, Word is printing your document in the background as you work. A number next to the printer icon shows the current page number being printed. To cancel the print job, double-click the printer icon.)

OK, I know you can make the numbering start at a certain number (Insert -> Page Numbers ; press Formatting button, then set the option to "Start at" and set the number); I know how not to show page number on the front page (in the Insert -> Page Numbers dialog, there is a checkbox "Show number on front page" or something like that). But the first and second page... If I had to do that, and I could print, I would print out the first two pages, then insert page numbers, and print the rest of the pages. If you have to submit it electronically... I don't have the solution to that one.

Click on Tools, then on Options, then on the View tab, and make sure the "Status bar" option is ticked. Click OK and you should see the missing information once again displayed across the foot of your screen in "Page Layout" mode. I have just done this on a Word document, and the bar disappeared then returned, so it ought to work for you, too. Better now?
