So, two days ago Windows 10 forced the update on me and when everything was done all my desktop files were gone. Luckily, I found them in an old user file because for some reason windows made a new separate user file? anyway, I had moved all the desktop icons that were in the old user file to my new desktop. Then today, windows "encountered a problem", restarted itself, and started updating again. This time, it reverted back to my old user file, but now all the desktop files are completely gone. I cant find them in any user file at all. Underneath "Quick Access" some of them pop up at the bottom but if I try to click them it was the file was either "moved or deleted". I tred googling the problem but I cant find anything that works. I know it's partially my fault for not saving the files some wheres else, but I really wasnt thinking that something like this would ever happen because honestly, this is bull. Is there any hope for me? Where have my files gone.

That's weird. So when you do the quick access, left quick the file, click info and see the path that it is in the text box. Copy that and then go to my computer and paste the path to the bar at top (not the search one but it will have C:\\ or something, I have a MAC but I have Windows 10 on an external hard dive but not super familiar). If it cant find it, go to a tab that says restore (could be wrong on the tab name, but there is a tab that allows you to restore the file to an earlier version). If you can't restore it to an earlier version, go to my computer, go into your C:\ drive, and go into program files and search. Or even use the search box (the one with the little eyeglass) to see where it has been moved and then move it back to the apporpriate location (the one in the info). It's kind of hard to explain but I hope you can fix it! Problems do come about when things are moved. Usually desktop icons point at the location the file is. It's like a URL. Try to make new shortcuts (desktop icons) by left clicking and selecting "create a shortcut". Good Luck!

We are M$. Resistance is futile. Your puters and lappies will adapt to service us. We will add your technology to our own. M$ has announced that Windows is NOT a top priority. Pushing people to use the cloud and mobile has become their focus now. The truth about Windows 10 is coming out.

As you have found out, M$ is willing to do anything to get the market share of 10 to increase by forcing 10 on you. They make the promise that you can go back if you don't like it, but they also deleted your recovery partition. It is my opinion that M$ deletes the recovery partition to keep people from going back to their old OS. I guess if you write as many bad OSes as they do you got to find a way to make it look like everyone likes it. To them, stealing your privacy is more important then your right to choose which OS you want.

Going back to your original OS is your best bet. Windows 10 is a nightmare of an OS that is going to get worse as time goes by. Between the forced updates to the built in back door you will have no idea what is happening to your puter.

If it has been less then 30 days try this. Back up everything important and then try clicking Start, Settings, Update & security, Recovery, Go back to (last version)

If M$ deleted your recovery partition and the above info does not get you back to your original OS, then you will need to order the recovery DVD's from the manufacturer or worse reinstall the hard way. Some manufactures still have recovery DVD. Post your make and model and I'll see if they are available.

If you had Windows 8.1 you can use the link below to go back. You need to back up everything up and make sure you have a good product key on the bottom of the lappy. I do suggest that you download all your drivers before attempting this.

If you had Windows 7 then you will have to jump thru some hoops but it can be done.If you had Windows 7 then you will have to jump thru some hoops but it can be done. You will have to buy a 7 install DVD. If you do a search using one of the popular search engines you will find it available at several online retailers. Just make sure you pick one that backs up its sales. We have had a lot of success so far getting people back to 7 if you are willing to do the work.

Make sure when you go back that you DO NOT let these updates in. M$ is now hard coding spyware (back door) into Windows 7 and 8. Go to the control panel and click on Windows updates. In the upper left corner click on change settings. Then change important updates to never check for updates. This puts your updates in the manual mode. Reboot the system and go back to your control panel. Click on Windows updates and then click check for updates. Find the update KB 3035583 and hide it so it does not get installed again. Let us know if this does not work, M$ keeps coming up with new methods to force 10 on people.

You should also hide these updates KB 3068708 KB 3022345 KB 3075249 KB 3080149 These updates give 7 and 8 the same spying capability as 10 has.

You should also hide these updates KB 2952664 KB 2976978 KB 2977759 KB 3050265 KB 3050267 KB 3068708 These have to do with compatibility with being upgraded to 10 and need to be dealt with.

From Tom's Hardware:

When Microsoft created Windows 10, it tied in numerous monitoring and data collection tools. The operating system is capable of gathering your search history, web usage, Windows Store usage, details of what applications you use, voice recordings, emails, geographic information and just about anything else that is on your PC. This information is gathered in part for improving Windows-based services, but it is also used for market research and advertising purposes.

The upgrade process creates a windows.old folder that has a copy of all of your files in the event something happens. Did you look there to see if your files are there?
