How to convert AVCHD file to AVI format?

I want to convert AVCHD video to AVI for sharing my AVCHD video with with your friends and family. But AVCHD file can not be played on Windows Media Player or Movie Maker. Some pepole said I should convert AVCHD to AVI or WMV format, how can I do this?

I always use nidesoft video converter to convert video formats. But I don't convert AVCHD files.
