When i use the tab key in Word, it jumps half way across the page?

I take notes on my computer in class using microsoft word. I have never had an issue with it but randomly two days ago when I'd hit the "tab" key insead of just moving in slightly (like what would normally happen when you hit tab) it jumps to pretty much the other side of the page.

I don;t know what is wrong that it is doing this. I've turned my computer off and on and run virus scans and all but nothing happens.

Please help.

Not a virus, just a tab stop on the ruler line for the paragraphs this happens in. Try this to fix it:

1. Select the paragraphs this affects (CTRL/A selects the entire document).

2. Right-click in the selection and select Paragraph.

3. Click the Tabs button.

4. There should be a value in the Tab stop position list box. If there is, click the Clear All button.

5. Click OK.

6. In Word 2007, if this also afflicts new documents, click the Default button.

7. Click OK.

Hope that helps.

Tabs are usually set as something by the default new document template. If you can find anything anywhere that talks about "Setting tabs" you can go change the default. Also, make sure that, if you can see the ruler, that you haven't clicked on it anywhere. If you see a black object on it, that's a tab setting

You just need to set your default tab stops at .5 inch.

Add vertical lines between newsletter-style columns Switch to print layout view. If your document is divided into sections, click in the section you want to change. On the Format menu, click Columns. Select the Line between check box Horizontal line Click where you want to insert the line. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading. Click Horizontal Line. Click the line that you want to insert.

Actually, I have same issues just like you. I think you should watch this video to learn how to set tab key properly.
