i tried to increase the virtual memory size by going to advanced option in system and by choosing custom paging file size. at that time it is working fine, but after a restart it is again going back to the initial small paging size. so i have to increase the page file size after every restart. is there any way to permenantly set the virtual memory size?

Hm...

All I could think is that the reason it might not be permanently taking is because you're not logging on your computer with an administrator account.

So next time you go to Control Panel, check the Administrator icon on under "User Accounts" and see if it's the same one that you see next time you boot up.

One other thing: for the virtual memory settings, check to see it's maximum Allowed rate, because if you are exceeding that, sure, it will likely restore to the last acceptable size.

Finally, check your available disk space: if you are kinda low, Windows may take some of the file size away from the virtual memory.

That's all I can think of; never seen the problem before.

How do you know the size of the virtual memory are you running a perfmon check or are you just going by what the performance options says for virtual memory? Also sometimes setting the virtual memory too high can actually decrease performance.

Windows Xp should be able to increase the size of VM by itself, at least this is the case in my computer. The best way to go about your problem is to increase the RAM size. Thats what VM is, it acts like ram but it still slower. So better get some more RAM and this should take care of the problem .By the way Windows Xp requires at least 256 mb, but the optimal size is 512 mb.
