Blender is free so you don't have to pay for it. There is no "best" when it comes to 3D modeling programs. There's only opinions of what is "best" when it comes to different users. What software you want to use depends entirely on what you want to use it for and which industry and which company you intend to work for. I personally use 3Ds Max because my company uses that program. I have also used Maya when I was with another company and have also learned how to use Cinema4D.

There are different opinions on which program is best at what so there's no definitive answer.

If you're just starting out with 3D modeling, and it really sounds like you are, I suggest you go download Blender and learn how to work in a 3D environment before you ask which program you should invest in because there simply isn't a "best" just a "preferred" depending on who you talk to.

Autodesk is one of the best proffessional 3D Modelling software kits out there, its used by proffesionals on big budget movies and games too. Maya is a good one to get :) as is Max

The big big big top of the line programs are probably Maya or 3Ds Max. Some may also argue that zBrush is, but only for modeling. I also very much agree with the person below me.

Blender; $0 or $10/month

As a hobbyist, freelancer, or small to medium sized studio you can use Blender as a low-cost alternative to Maya ($125/month), ZBrush ($800), and After Effects ($20/month).

It depends on what you want to do, and what you are comfortable with.

For general 3D, the answer is usually 3DStudio Max.

For character animation, the answer is usually Maya.

But it kind of depends on you.
