Well for general computing that would be OS X but for tinkering that would be Ubuntu Linux which will actually run on PC or Mac very happily.

Of you want to build your own PC from spare bits and run Ubuntu you will also be fine.

OS X is only licensed to run on Macs - read the EULA.
Linux Mint 11

Well personally, I prefer Linux over OS X.

Both are pretty similar, being Unix-like. But I prefer Linux because it is open-source and a heck of a lot more customizable.

Because Linux is open-source I can recompile my kernel. I can take out drivers and features I don't need, make it take advantage of special features of my processor, and just basically build a lightweight kernel that's completely optimized for my hardware. This is why Linux-based distros are some of the fastest and most stable OS's around.

There are just some things you can't do with Windows/OS X, neither really gives you the ability to truly control or use your computer.

Linux is the better operating systems the reason being is that Linux is updated every three months and up graded every 12 months and it cost nothing, all the application is professional software that you don't have to pay for unlike Mac OS/x it is over priced and over rated it has not got 3D graphic like Linux has... Apple Mac OS/x like MS windows is a fake

The only difference you will get from a MAC compared to Linux is the software they write and software written for it. The underlying operating system is Unix enhanced with other operating systems embedded into it. Everything is written for Windows so it is basically unlimited to a certain degree, which also means third party software will tend to make it crash more often. For gaming, Windows is still dominant. MAC and Linux are stable, fairly secure and reliable. Updateing doesn't normally crash the operating system, but is can and does once in awhile. OS X is not easy to install on a computer that isn't a MAC. The disk will install propritery hardware drivers which may cause issues. Trying to install OS X86 is a pain in the neck. I run all six computers dual boot, Windows and Linux. But I use Linux 95% of the time. I use PCLinuxOS KDE because it is comfortable to use. It is based on Mandriva. It's just easier to use and demonstrate Linux to people who have never seen it or used it. On the Humor side: "Don't Be A Microsoft Hostage!"
