use this website and find out for ur self. disabling services will increase ur systems boot time and security (xp naturally has around 70-100 services enabled by default)

http://techrepublic.com.com/i/tr/downloads/home/windows_xp_services_that_can_be_disabled.pdf

u may need a adobe/pdf add-on.

yes stopping services does help make your computer run faster, but there are other things to make it run faster also like disabling custom visualizations and cursors, also setting the performance settings to best performance instead of best appearance.

in any rate here is a link to a very well known and trusted web page it is a list of the windows services and what ones you may disable, after you shut down many services you may find that something isn't working exactly as it did before, so you may need to adjust things a bit to find the best configuration for you.

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

this is the best list, Ive been trusting black vipers recommendations for many years now.

good luck

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del

In the window .look for the services running under your USERNAME ....now except the Explorer.exe and Taskmgr.exe you can close all other services BUT they should be listed under your USERNAME and NOT under SYSTEM or LOCAL SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE etc

And yes ...go to Start --> Run ---> Type msconfig and press ok

Goto Startup tab and uncheck whatever you don't want ....expand the Command field and read the directories ..you will know what each Startup Item is related to which software.

It's not really a question of speed but rather safety. Stop and disable all services related to remote assistance and remote registry access. Stop messenger, error reporting service if it annoys you like it annoys me. There may be a few others but these are the usual ones I disable.
