Generally, people want the latest version (software, car, cell, girlfriend, lover, salary and so on). That does not apply to computers.

You say that when someone else uses the computer with Windows 7, you are using the computer with XP.

It is assumed that you mean like XP's are more ancient than the 7's, then the possibility exists that the best operating system for the oldest is XP, 2000 or Vista, instead of 7 or 8.

Most current systems do not typically include all drivers for the oldest computers, and just as computer manufacturers avoid putting at our disposal the drivers that could make those old XP computer to work perfectly under Windows 7, so you feel that is sooo outdated PC and you must go out and buy a 'late model', which comes with Windows 8.1 or 7 SP1.

Actually, the best operating system for a PC is the immediately preceding its manufacture, with the PC came to market. We can make it work perfect with the next version, but almost always with some gaps, for example: When you install 7 on a PC that had XP from factory, we usually have problems with the video drivers, sometimes also with audio drivers (in many cases do not get them to work, in other work by halves, in other produces crashes or blue screen and reboots).

It's not bad to use XP if the PC is rather old and drivers for more recent systems are difficult to obtain, in which case change the operating system may mean changing your PC.

Otherwise, if the PC is not too old (less than 5 years) you should change to a more recent operating system. Vista Ultimate and 7 Ultimate are good choices, so no Windows 8.x that is too far from Windows XP.

I continued to use XP until the last update from Microsoft (which came through AFTER they had said they were not supporting XP anymore) which totally crapped out XP so I couldn't even get my computer to run. Luckily, I'd bought a copy of Vista a while before so just loaded that on the same computer, lost all the stuff I had saved to my desktop and other XP-lated stuff but all my important stuff I save to removable memory storage so I didn't lose anything serious (as far as I know so far). I liked XP, worked just perfectly for me. MS's updates are horrible, just went through a update for Vista earlier this week and it did something weird to my computer--software would work fine for about 10 mins. then go into this static (noisy) freeze until I rebooted. This seems to have been fixed with yesterdays update (which I assume has the fix in it). All of which is making me feel that the next computer I buy will be a Mac (or Apple thing); I've gotten real real real fed up with Microsoft's inadequacies and slipshoddiness, and their greed, constantly putting out new versions which you have to buy and making an older version, which runs great, obsolete.

Since support for Windows XP ended in April, there have been 2 or 3 major, industry wide, vulnerabilities that have affected all computer devices. Windows Vista, 7 and 8 have all been updated with new security fixes to prevent these causing issues. XP has NOT been updated.

For example, look up the Poodle vulnerability. It is worrying how much secure information can be leaked because of it - all your passwords for your internet banking for example.

You CAN continue to use software that is not secure, but you certainly shouldn't!

You can but the only thing is there will be no more updates for XP and some things might not work that well so I would say try to get Windows 7

Windows xp is the fastest os Microsoft has created , It has way less requirements hardware wise and is less cpu intensive, I still use it , windows 7 and 8 are only usefull for users who do alot of gaming and video editing(Not to say that XP can do those things because it does it faster).

Hello,

Windows XP is dead now and so your PC will not get any official security updates from Microsoft, if you use Windows XP. So, though you can use XP OS, you may not be happy with its interface now. Moreover, the PC which has XP on it is now vulnerable to malware attacks and viruses. Example see below link

Newer isn't always better. But what happens is that people are forced to use the latest version because Microsoft won't support the other versions after a period of time. Personally, Windows 98SE was my favorite and I have Windows ME on a desktop (but I don't use that computer for the internet).

As long as you're aware that if you use XP to go online with, you'll be very vulnerable to all kinds of virus attacks on your computer because XP is no longer supported by Microsoft.

get some disk imaging software (I use Acronis trueimage) and generate an image of the c drive

Store it on an external hard drive (or drives) and/or dvds (and keep that hard drive safe and not plugged into the computer)

Keep all the stuff YOU generate on an external drive as well

then who gives a st//ff if you get a virus

(all you do is copy the image back onto the drive using the disk imaging software (if you use acronis you can create a bootable cd which loads the software on boot up - so even if you cant boot from the hard drve you can still copy the image from the external drive back onto the hard drive)

Then hey presto you have your clean OS back again with no virus

(its FAR easier using the imaging software and an image of the drive than trying to re-install the OS again or relying on MS's version of a "restore" partition)

MS are using the old con on trying to get you to buy latest software by saying they aint going to support the old one any more

In a lot of cases their updates are not that important if you keep your antivirus up to date and take a few basic precautions (which you should do even with latest software)

I like how everybody keeps throwing out 'ZOMG - it's not supported and so people are going to haxxor it!' without having any clue what they are talking about.

First, no version of Windows (or Internet Exploder for that matter) has ever been secure - users have always had to rely on 3rd party antivirus/spyware/malware/etc. to keep their machines clean (and before anyone opens their mouth - this applies to you too Mac users).

Second, nobody should give Microsoft a penny more than they absolutely have to - so as long as your machine continues to do everything you need it to do, then there is no reason to 'upgrade'.

The only limitations I've run into with Win XP machines is driver support for really new hardware, and at least one of my machines doesn't seem to want to load the newest version of Flash (but it might just need a service pack).

Oh - and nobody should be using Windows 8. It is a f**king joke - on par with Windows Vista and Windows ME.

It's definitely 'okay' but not really recommended as it's very outdated by 3 generations, and Windows 10 will apparently be available some time in 2015. And it's not even on sale, as is not Vista, but Vista got totally got rid of as it wasn't 'that good'. You probably still can get copies of it for sure but it's like, buying a brand new phone that has never been opened but it was released 10 years ago and since then a lot has changed. I guess you know what I mean.

Using XP - at least on an Internet connected PC - is problematic, because it's no longer supported by Microsoft with security updates.

If a PC originally shipped with XP, it probably isn't powerful enough to run Windows 7 or 8. However you could install a version of Linux, such as Lubuntu for example, and Linux tends to be more secure than Windows anyway.

No, for it is written in Leviticus 34:8, "For to use outdated software in the manner that thy companion useth updated software is abomination." xp is not totally ok with newer hardware, some core processors and amd 64bit processors are not allow to run xp.

also no device drivers or newer hardware printer or scanner drivers to xp.

also some programs needs to update dotnet framework or direct x 11 .xp can't use with higher than direct x 9.

Also Although home users often hit the 4 GB limit of 32-bit operating systems, it is unlikely the 128 GB memory limit of Windows XP x64 will be a problem in the near future. A 64-bit operating system can theoretically address 16 exabytes of information. Still, Microsoft capped the limit in its Windows XP x64 operating system to 128 GB, a limit that is likely to outlast the use of Windows XP x64 as a home operating system.

2014-11-09 16:07:17 UTC
Yes it is, one quarter of the Worlds PCs are still using XP because it is good.

That version of Windows is not being updated anymore though by Microsoft.

You can change Windows things out for aftermarket things, for instance the firewall was never very good, and the only IE browsers that will work on it are pretty ancient now so use one that is still being updated such as Firefox, and get a new antivirusl from Filehippo which usually have their own firewall built in which will automatically replace the Windows one;

http://www.filehippo.com/

Just make sure that nothing else is bundled with it.

To make sure that any non Windows programs are up to date you need to download Secunia, which is free and excellent, and is described in the article below, which is someone else`s opinion;

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2102606/how-to-keep-your-pc-secure-when-microsoft-ends-windows-xp-support.html

Your PC is likely to be rather old and might suffer some disaster such as a hard drive failure or a malware infection at sometime, so you need to have a system in place to restore it from that eventuality.

You can use an external drive to do that by using free software;

http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Download that and register it with your e-mail address and they will send you an e-mail telling you how to use it which you can print off for future reference.

You can create a rescue disc with it, or just save your Windows installation, or clone your entire hard drive.

Other people are trying to keep XP up to date, might be worth a shufti;

http://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/12020-windows-xp-service-pack-4-unofficial/

XP is being supported for at least another year at vast cost to the UK National Health Service as that is what they use, there is a modification that you can do to your PC to get those security downloads, but I can`t find it at the moment, might be worth a Google;

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/apr/07/uk-government-microsoft-windows-xp-public-sector

Dunbar Pappy knows of it so you might search his answers.

Best of luck, regards, Bob.

Sure.

I'm guessing that the PC is also not new, so updating could be problematic. XP is mature and stable, but isn't supported by MS any more, which is a shame as it was far better than ME and Vista.

Be aware it is vulnerable in security terms. Most vulnerabilities remaining could be addressed by installing good firewall/antivirus packages and avoiding putting store personal data or important data on it if you can.
