Extension Help The System Know Which Program to use to open a file. So if you change file extension the file may become unusable. Normally the system hide the file extension it already knows. Since you provide very less information about where and how did you got this message I am guessing that you got this message while renaming a file. In this case do the following and then rename the file. Go to "Control Pane" > "Folder Options">"view" tab Select "Hide extensions for known file types " You may also want to select restore defaults if u prefer the defaults settings. Click apply. You would notice that all the know extension have gone. Now you can rename the files without changing the extension. Another possibility is that the file you are trying to rename has an extension that the system does not recognize, In that case change only the file name and not the extension. For example if you are changing a file named "name.dat" Only rename the part before the "."(dot). In this case "name", and leave the rest unchanged.
