Ok, what I'm basically saying is, I want to download the file as if I just got it and there is no automatic file type associated with it and I am able to right click on the file and send it to the compressed zip folder where I can extract the files. I really don't even need to choose a open with file because I just realized XP automatically has the extracting wizard. I just need to completely remove ANY file type association, not be forced to find a program to "open with" with no program under the open with, even when I browse can open this. The right-clicking open with does not work. The file wants to open in IE each time because I unknowingly typed in the file type field. so now each time I open the .rar file, it refused to open with unassociated. I want to make it back unassociated so I can just right click and send it to compression folder for xp wizard to extract. If I try to undo it, if forces me to choose from the list, no other options and I don't want to choose from the list, because my list contains no program to download the .rar file. thanks

Windows XP does NOT have built-in capabilities for extracting .rar files. If no application is associated with the .rar file type, then the "Open with" option is SUPPOSED to come up. "Open with" can be used even after the file type has been associated. In fact, selecting the "Open with" option, selecting a program, and checking the box "Always use this program to open this type of file" is the fastest way to associate a file type with a program.

You know that .RAR files are much smaller in file size compared to when they are extracted. It also protect your files from being corrupt. You have to download WinRAR because Windows can only extract compressed (zipped) file and it has no built-in .RAR extractor. WinRAR can be downloaded for free (I think 40 days).

You can use Rarlab.com WinRAR for a free trial basis which I believe is a week or month to temporarily use to open your .RAR files.
