As everyone else (pretty much) has said Linux Mint 18.1 is probably the best distribution for beginners. It has a very familiar feel to windows and is simply superior in terms of stability. I've been running Linux Mint for 3 years now without any troubles that my own stupidity did not cause. Currently running it and I love it I'm at the point I hate going back to using windows.

I've seen both Ubuntu and Mint do some nasty things which breaks apps. If you want to try something which Ubuntu and Mint are based on, check out Trinity. It's a rewrite of KDE3 desktop with Debian underneath it for the OS. You may find it at: http://exegnulinux.net/downloads/wheezy/exegnulinux_4.2.iso if you dont want to play with systemd which for a beginner I don't recommend.

All good answers.........try Ubuntu Mate.....its about as easy as it gets.

If you try it....and run into a snag- just google the issue- there IS an easy answer (as it is with most any Linux).
