If a lot of people will be using it Debian or FreeNAS:

Linux is more scalable than FreeBSD as a rule, though I'd say the best versions of servers are Debian Slackware and Fedora. For heavy internet use FreeBSD is pathetic, but FreeNAS is recommended subject to the Caveat I made on the other answer to your question -- if you aren't used to ZFS it can lead to data loss.

Wow. What a question.

I vote Linux because I know it and have used it for a long time. Also BSD just doesn't seem like it has as much movement as it did when people were first talking about that on the BBS. Linux servers have a lot of feet on the ground, but there are also a lot of distros, package managers, backend monitoring thingies specific to a distro...

Both are wonderful server platforms for anything you could want to do with a server. If it is a webserver, consider CentOS a good option. It's Redhat minus branding and free. I actually like Ubuntu Server as a server for files or if you are going the cloud route. Super easy to use, good updates, the best community.

I've not used BSD in a production environment, but playing with it was fine. I just broke the Linux way. Certainly not knocking freebsd.
