Question:
Why is Linux so difficult?

Linux OS is not compatible with Netflix. I don't now the difference between browser problems and OS problems, but YouTube videos play poorly. HTML5 players for media streaming don't work.I cant install Google chrome or Opera because the goddamn Synaptic program is running. I can't shut this off or uninstall it. I refuse to use command line code to install open source software. I want Linux to be far more compatible with everything.
The software box is voluminous, but I do not have the patience to run every single one to see which one is best. The goddamn file names are meaningless. I don't want to go to school to learn what boot.ini means, not to mention the hundreds of other acronyms. I repeat, Linux is for elitists who can't comprehend why everyone doesn't want to learn code.

I want to apologize for Higgy Baby. I've been using Linux since '94 on and off - and primarily since 2003. It is a family of technical OSes for commodity computers which Ubuntu used to make more accessible to other users than it does now. I;m guessing you are using Ubuntu though synaptic has been adopted by other Debian derivatives. First of all for youtube go to synaptic and install Flashplayer non-free. Also use it to get Google Chrome and Firefox. If it doesn't work look up how to use apt on the command line and how to use the command line. Or switch to Linux Mint which is not exactly easier but - even for non-technical users is saner.

It frustrates me when I visit a Linux forum to read a question where someone is asking how to do something and they are told to go read. Rarely, if ever, does anyone suggest what they should read, and when you Google search the question, the only results are forums with people asking how to do something that are told to go read. Read what? Every document I come across seems to expect a certain level of understanding. So when there is a knowledge gap, I would hope the community would be willing to help out, but there is an attitude of if you don't already know, no one will tell you.

The unwillingness of the community to share is by far the biggest stumbling block in my quest to understand the Linux operating system.

It isn't like I'm an idiot I have been working in enterprise IT since 1997. I have been keeping up with my Microsoft Certifications since I got my MCSE for Windows NT3.5. I am also a certified on VMware ESX and VSphere. Why treat me so harshly for having a question?

Hello,

If you just wanted to watch Netflix download Chromium. It's where Google Chrome originated and was purchased from, but just looks slightly different. It will let you run Netflix as that's how I do it at home. It uses a bit less resources as Google Chrome as well.

As for the command line on Linux there's no work around there. You will have to at certain times use the command line in Linux. However, there are several places online for each distro where you can copy and paste the codes so you don't have to do any hard work. If you wanted to use the easiest one Ubuntu Mint using Cinnamon is the most popular one when switching from Windows. It gives you the easiest usage of them all without having to learn a technical background.

Why is Windows so difficult? Or, why is Mac so difficult?

Also, Google Chrome works fine on Linux, YouTube videos play fine, as does all HTML5 with either Chrome or Firefox. Why you want Opera is beyond me... but, it works fine.

Synaptic installs, removes, and updates programs. Don't try to close it while its running, it is meant to run to completed. The Terminal (Command Line) isn't scary and is important to use.

Not sure what 'software box' is.

boot.ini isn't in Linux its in Windows NT

Try out a different distro or a different browser (Opera, Firefox). I don't see why it's difficult to have Netfilx running in a browser unless you did something to the computer or messed with the settings. Download Linux Mint Cinnamon LIVE CD and see if Netflix will work.

Actually linux is not difficult. Linux is only a small learning curve. Once it's setup and running smoothly you can forget about it.

You are very confused, or at least full of sh!t.

Which Linux are you trying to run???

Netflix does run on Linux....at least my computer thinks it does. I never went to school or took any class to learn how to use Linux...and I have never used the command line. I have been using Linux Mint or Ubuntu since 2008.

You should be able to install chrome from the software center without any problems- and netfilx will run on chrome.

Perhaps you are the issue....not Linux.

Lol there is no boot.ini on Linux.

You should use Linux to get some nice young grills.

Actually linux was designed for professional purposes not for the basic use that we all do.

Thats why linux is more complex than windows and mac os.

Linux isn't that difficult. First off, I would recommend installing Google Chrome with "software installer," once you've downloaded the Google-Chrome.deb package. Second, though it should come preinstalled, download Adobe Flash Player and for the last thing, just follow the instructions most websites give on how to install Linux based packages.

Sounds like you don't need to use Linux then if you aren't willing to learn how to properly use it, use the command line for proper system administration, or learn how to work around certain limitations. You also don't want to remove Synaptic on Debian-based systems. You don't have to learn how to code in order to use Linux either, so drop the ignorance and find a better distro that works for you.

I have 3 different Linux computers that run netflix, youtube and amazon just fine. Obviously you have no idea what you're doing. I'm 75 years old(tomorrow)with no real tech. training and have no problems with Linux.

Linux is usually for people that have college experience. Usually engineers or scientists use it. Maybe some technical artists. Linux is not for everyone.

My advice: give up on Linux. if you don't want to use the CLI, and don't want to learn new things regarding Linux, then give up.

Go back to using Windows or if you have the money to spend, use a Mac computer.

You must be running an outdated version, Netflix and YouTube runs fine here, and Chrome needs 64-bit but it is here too. Mentioning Synaptic as default says to me it is at least 4 years old, a different Store App is being used by Ubuntu of recent vintage.

"I refuse to use command line code to install open source software."

Then it is you who is difficult, not Linux. The command line interface (CLI) is the true heart of linux.

No it is not. ALL my business customers are now only using Linux. NONE of them has any problems with it. And none of them ever has to use the command prompt. You obviously are just no good at anything computer related.

I find it fairly easy to use... No trojan, defrag, or asking permission for a leased OS. Think about why you originally switched from Win to Linux

In my view it has many cause.

For example:

1.Its complicated

2.It changes constantly

3.Pointless competition

4.Mediocre Hardware&peripheral support

5.Its slow

6.Programs suck

7.Gaming

8.Its free

9.Philosophy versus practicality

10.The community

You are the reason Windows (all GUI's) were invented. And millions more like you, nothing wrong with that.

I suggest you try Zorin OS (Windows like look) or Elementary OS (Mac like look)

They will be more userfriendly to you.
