Are there any other equivalent programs that work - well - with word and access but without the price tag? In UK

As others have indicated you can read Access database files using OpenOffice.org without difficulty, but not the other stuff.
This by, the way, is quite normal. For example, Microsoft Visual FoxPro and Microsoft Access can read each others files without any difficulty, but they cannot read each others reports, forms, etc.
I agree that it can be very annoying.
I don’t know of any program that converts anything but the files for database products.

OO (Open Office) can't open Access files - you can export from access and import into OO Base by following :
But this will only import the data not the form/logic. Bit rubbish I know!
Basically Microsoft doesn't want an other program but Access using Access files.

You should use Oxygen Office (premium edition of OpenOffice - it's also free)
Oxygen Office can work with Word file format of MS Office, but i havent test with Access

Access isn't a document format, it's a database.
As far as free software... you could Import your Access DB into MySQL if you wanted to. You can usually import Access into just about any database system you have.
