I've tried both on different machines, and dual-booted on the same machine. My informed answer: "It depends". The rest of this answer is my personal experience, and personal bias.

I don't like the Unity interface on my primary desktop computer. I do too many different things during the course of the day; Unity is too limiting. I'm now dual-booting Xubuntu 12.04 and OpenSUSE 12.1; using Xubuntu, mostly. (I just haven't spent enough time with OpenSUSE yet. It's very promising, and much prettier. It will take a while for me to migrate my applications and workflow to the new environment.)

I was getting used to Unity on my laptop, running Ubuntu 11.10. I'd be OK with it for the smaller set of activities that I do on a laptop. But Canonical decided to drop support for the Centrino processor in my favorite old laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. That's what really drove me to try OpenSUSE. I'm using it right now; it's rock-solid and reliable on this machine. And very pretty.

I think I prefer Ubuntu's Debian package management to OpenSUSE's RPM package management. But it's not a show-stopper.

I'm really excited about what I've read about OpenSUSE 12.2, and looking forward to trying it. Between my lack of enthusiasm with Unity on my desktop computer, and Canonical's dropping support for my favorite laptop, it looks like I'll be moving to OpenSUSE as my primary OS, on both my desktop and laptop.

That's more than I planned to write. I hope it helps.

Depends, mostly on "better for who?

A new Linux user: Ubuntu

A power-user: SUSE

A KDE fan: SUSE (it's implementation is better than (K)ubuntu)

A system-admin/tech support guy at a business: SUSE (because of YaST)

A family desktop: Ubuntu

Long-term deployment: Tie

SUSE has the Tumbleweed repository, effectively making it a rolling-release; Ubuntu Precise has LTS support for five years.
