anti-virus software?
2008-02-09 22:48:02 UTC
i currently am using norton anti-virus but my subscription runs out in a few months, i'm not exactly thrilled with it.

i was wondering what is the best virus-scanning software i can get. i guess not only virus scanning but also to check for spyware and malware and adware and all that business...or should i just buy a mac, haha

I have found that the following combination provides me with an even better experience than a pay-for-use anti-virus and spyware protection bundle from companies such as Norton or McAfee.

Why? Their progressive attitudes towards fighting viruses and spyware allows for quicker patches to their programs, and more complete virus definitions in the short run.

For virus protection, I use AVG Free Advisor. Don't be discourage by it's $0.00 dollar price tag. AVG is a very well made and well implemented program with many useful sub-programs to make your computer safer. As of February 5th, AVG Free was given the award for 100% virus detection and protection in the Virus Bulliten group. While not providing real-time protection, AVG does have a very detailed virus definition library and superb virus isolation during scans.

For protection from spyware, try Spybot Search & Destroy. Offering all the features of full, pay-for-us spyware protection programs, Spybot provides such options as a full registry backup before removing your spyware, and, like AVG, an extremely well kept spyware threat library. Easy to use, free, and smart to a very extensive degree.

Both of the above options provide upgrades to professional versions for a nominal fee, but, if you combine these, you should be fine with the free versions.

These options may or may not suit you. For other free options in regards to antivirus, try AntiVir; for other spyware options, try Microsoft's Windows Defender for Windows XP [still free, even though it's from Microsoft].

Good luck with you attack on computer insecurity, and, remember: nothing works better to stop viruses than your downloading discretion.

I use AVG Free and on a second computer I have AVAST Free.

Both good anti virus programs.

For spyware I use AD-Aware 2007 and Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 both free.

It relies upon on which software has extra as much as date "virus definition" information. Any answer is a wager. i could wager the av-xp is sweet till the McAfee utility is as much as date too. counting on the severity of the an infection, it may desire to be perfect to leave it on my own. Anti virus utility has exchange into worse than the virus themselves.
