In Ubuntu, one can type "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras" and a lot of things will work better from that point on.

You can also do an "apt-cache search gstreamer | more" to see what plugins are available for gstreamer.

Depending on the desktop Environment, use the package management program synaptic to install mplayer (gnome) Kmplayer (KDE) Kaffine (KDE) VLC multimedia player Totem Media player and then install the codecs. Ubuntu install Ubuntu restricted (Gnome) will install flash player and other restricted files, or Kubuntu Restricted for (KDE). For music there is Amarok, Audacious, LMMS, playmidi, rhythmbox and several others.

When using the package management programs type in a key word like music, video, ect ect and it should bring up a list of the different programs you can install. You shouldn't need to install software through the terminal, which is difficult for people who are not familiar with console commands and how they are used. I hope this is of some help for you. Best wishes.

you need the win32codecs, you cannot save this - unless you want to really use linux,

it will be in the respective distributions repositories, just use the software manager to install it
