When I go to a new line it makes a small space for the next paragraph. I can get rid of it by going to Home > Paragraph > Don't add spaces between paragraphs of the same style. I press it and the spaces go away, but then I simply check it without highlighting it and type 'Set as default.' But next time I open word, it'll be back to putting spaces between paragraphs. How do I get rid of that permanently?

Try this instead:

1. Click in an affected paragraph.

2. Click the Home tab on the Ribbon.

3. Click the arrow in the lower right corner of the Styles section.

4. The style for your paragraph should have a bold box around it. You may have to scroll down to find it.

5. Hover the cursor over the style. A listbox arrow should appear. Click it.

6. Select Modify from the list box.

7. Click the Format button and select Paragraph.

8. Check that "Don't add spaces..." checkbox.

9. Make sure the value in the After combination box is zero (0).

10. Click OK.

11. If you want this to carry forward to other documents based on the template this one is based on, click the radio button for New Documents Based On This Template.

12. OK out of everything.

All paragraphs in the document with that style should adjust themselves.

When you close your document, you may see a warning message asking if you want to save the changes to Normal.dotx. This is an anti-virus measure, intended to alert you that something has changed in Normal.dotx. In this case, you made the change, so you want to accept it.

Hope that helps.

Your teacher probably was asking for one and a half line spacing which gives more space between the lines than single spacing. This makes it easier to mark. It is simple - just press Ctrl+5 Ctrl+1 gives single spacing Ctrl+2 gives double spacing You can put your cursor anywhere in a paragraph and do this to change the spacing. Or highlight as many paragraphs as you want then do it.

You need to change the normal.dot / normal.dotm template

Open word File->Open

in the filename box type (without quotes)

"%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates"

press Enter.

Now select "normal.dotm" (assuming your using MS Word 2007+)

Change the paragraph settings in this file then save it again. in the same place.

If UAC stops you saving it there save it somewhere else and then open windows explorer (open any folder on your desktop / "my computer" etc.)

and in the address bar type You need to change the normal.dot / normal.dotm template

Open word File->Open

in the filename box type (without quotes)

"%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates" and drag your new normal.dotm file in to this folder.
