I recently had a similar problem which was caused by various old/incompatible versions of Java and left-over bits and pieces. The solution was, to get rid of EVERYTHING that even faintly smelled of Java which is a somewhat tedious process:

1 - Go into your control panel and delete any and all versions of Java

2. Download, unzip, and run JavaRa. Documentation is at http://raproducts.org/javara.html Download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/javara/files/latest/download

3. Delete any and all files that have anything to do with Java or with Sun.

4. run regedit to edit the registry (back it up first!) and delete all entries with Java or Sun

5. Re-install the latest version of Java
