I used the Microsoft Works word processor that comes with Vista to make my resume. It is basically the same thing as word. So if I email resumes to people, will they be able to open it if they have an older version of word?

Actually, Word can open Works WP files and Works WP can create Word files. It's more polite to produce files that your recipients don't have to fiddle with, so the second is the better choice. Do this:

1. Click the File->Save As menu item.

2. In the Save As Type list box, select Word 97-2003 document (*.doc).

3. Click Save.

Hope that helps.

Some will, some won't it all depends upon whether the person receiving your resume knows how to open a works file in word. In my office, everyone sends those resumes to me to open, if I weren't there, they would simply get deleted. My advice to you, go back and open your resume, and then save as a word document, you have the option in Works, just go to file, click on save as, and when the box opens up go to save as type (at the bottom of the box) and scroll until you find Word Document or something that refers to Word.

They should be able to but not by merely double clicking on the download button to open the file when you send it as an attachment. They will have to save it onto their computer outside of the email environment and then from within Word open it and change the file format to all files, as otherwise they will only be able to see .doc files. However, if you have not done it in table format you should be able to save it as an rtf file which again can be opened in Word.

XP and Vista does not count number. What concerns is the version of word that your are using 2003 vs 2007. word 2007 default document extension is .docx so in case you prefer to apply them on a computer that has word 2003 in basic terms shop document as with the previous .rfile extension. you additionally can ask your college to place in the Microsoft workplace Compatibility %. for word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 document codecs Please Vote

There is a free, online converter which will convert your Works document to Word:

www.media-convert.com

Or, you could save your Works document to a txt file with File,Save As, then set filetype to text or txt.

Most word processing programs can open a text file.

Another option, there is a free, widely used program which is compatible with Microsoft Office.
